Parent Resources

Parents can make an inquiry at the school for a list of community resources to support a variety of needs. Further information can also be found below....

 Assembly of Students

Assembly time for students is 8:40 a.m. and 12:25 p.m. We ask your cooperation in seeing that the students do not arrive sooner than 10-15 minutes before assembly time. An exception to this would be times when students are involved in a school activity. When the weather is favorable, students wait outdoors until the bell rings. During cold or inclement weather, they are permitted to enter the school and wait inside.

Recess break (morning and/or afternoon) District Wide - is usually cancelled if:

  • the weather is extremely wet because of heavy rain or snow
  • the temperature goes below -23 Celsius including wind chill
  • Special Air Quality

 Attendance

Regular attendance is essential for student progress. It is important that all students arrive at school on time and be prepared for the day's lessons.

If a student is absent from school, parents are asked to please contact the school office or their teacher. The attendance of students is monitored each morning and afternoon. To assist us in accurately determining the presence and well-being of your child(ren), we have an automated answering system that will record absences between 4:00 pm and 8:00 am.

Students Leaving School Early

If a student needs to leave school early, a parent or guardian must pick them up and sign them out at the school office. Where possible, please inform your child's teacher that your child will be leaving early.

Illness

Normally children who are too ill to go outside for recess are too ill to be at school. A child's learning capabilities become limited and often, as with a cold, the illness is spread to others. Students who are ill should not be sent to school.

If a student becomes ill at school, the parent will be contacted and expected to make arrangements for the child to go home.

Medical Information

It is essential to forward pertinent student medical information to the school; please assist the school in ensuring that medical information is current. The school will keep a list of students with severe allergies, diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, etc. School personnel are not permitted to administer any kind of medication without WRITTEN ORDER from the parent and doctor.

Telephone Numbers and Changes

It is most important that the school have up-to-date home and work telephone numbers of the parents or guardians and emergency contact numbers. If changes occur during the year, please contact the school with the information immediately.

Visitors/Locked Door

Visitors are always welcome at Duggan School. During school operational hours, only the front door entrance will be open for students arriving late or parents/visitors coming into the school. All guests are asked to check in at the office upon arriving to the building.

Field Trips

Parents will be notified of all field trips prior to their occurrence.  Since field trips are an important part of the school programs, all students are expected to participate. A signed permission slip is also needed to ensure the child can attend and participate

Appropriate Dress

Footwear must be worn at all times in case of emergency (Fire Drills or school evacuations). We do ask that 'soiled or wet' footwear be removed upon entering the building until the student can get to their indoor shoes. Please ensure your child has footwear to wear outside as well as inside the building. We trust that families will support their child(ren) to dress appropriately according to the weather. If a child forgets mittens, scarves or hats, our school has a small supply of donated clothing that can be shared with families.

Personal Property

At the end of each school year, our lost and found boxes are bulging with unclaimed articles most of them good wearing apparel. Items that are clearly marked with a student's name are seldom taken or lost. Please label:

  1. children's footwear with felt markers
  2. outdoor clothing such as coats, jackets, rainwear
  3. backpacks and lunch kits

Please take a few minutes on a regular basis to check the lost and found boxes. You'll be surprised what you'll find!
